I. Medieval Libraries and Scriptoria
This section is intended to provide some basic bibliographical context on the major institutional settings in which medieval library catalogues, booklists, and inventories were produced. It is not possible to include more than a few representative items on individual libraries and scriptoria, but the reference works cited below will enable users to locate the relevant texts and scholarship.
Note that the scholarship on libraries and on scriptoria is overlapping, but items relevant to both categories are not double-listed below. General scholarship on manuscript studies and book history often deals with libraries and scriptoria, but cannot be covered here.

Earlier Latin Manuscripts: Tools for Studying the Scripts of the Oldest Latin Manuscripts. “Our database is founded on E. A. Lowe’s Codices Latini Antiquiores and thus focuses on non-documentary texts written before the year 800. All of the manuscripts in Lowe’s corpus and its supplements will be found in our database, along with corrections by Lowe and later scholars. In addition to the research tools provided by the catalogue, you will also find collections of manuscripts organised around origin, provenance, script, and text. These databases can be interrogated in several ways: filtering by keyword, which searches the text of the entire database, by library, by script, or by date (or any combination of those filters). The results can then be sorted by clicking on any of the column headings.”

Digital Scriptorium. “Digital Scriptorium (DS) is a growing consortium of American institutions with collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. As an online image repository, the DS website allows users to verify descriptive metadata with visual evidence of the manuscripts described. As an online union catalog, DS unites scattered rare materials, including dispersed manuscript leaves from dismembered books, into a national digital platform for cross-collection teaching and scholarly research. DS records not only include recognized touchstone materials, such as manuscripts signed and dated by their scribes or illuminators, but also unidentified manuscripts that are traditionally unlikely candidates for exhibition or reproduction in print.” See also the Wikipedia article by the project directors.

The focus here is on manuscript catalogues and on reference works such as repertories of texts that will lead to secondary scholarship on manuscripts in each genre. Secondary scholarship is not listed except when the primary focus is on manuscripts, and then only very selectively. Friedrich Stegmüller, Repertorium biblicum medii aevi, 11 vols. (Madrid,1950- ). WorldCat Vol. 1 covers the Bible itself, including apocryphal books; vols. 2-5 cover commentaries by named author; vols. 6-7 cover anonymous commentaries, listed by the cities in which the manuscripts survive; vols. 8-9 are supplements organized the same way as vols. 1-7; vols. 10-11 consist of a register of Initia. The online version allows full-text as well as various field searches. In the field “Bibliothek,” clicking on the tab “Auswahl” brings up a list of libraries cited. Note that searching library names in Volltext-Suche will not yield results (One can search and get results for “Albi,” for example, but a search for “Albi, Bibliothèque municipale” will not yield any hits, even though that is the form of the library name given in the “Bibliothek: Auswahl” list). Notated Manuscripts:
Databases:
MMMO Database: Medieval Music Manuscripts Online Database. “This database is an international virtual library of music sources and takes into account the noted manuscripts of Western language for the medieval period up to 1600. For example, within seconds this database will find all antiphonaries or the twelfth century or all Dominican manuscripts, etc.” Allows browsing by medieval sources (type of book, century, RISM entry, literary or theoretical work, or persons) or by modern archive or library. Selecting an archive brings up a list of manuscripts held there, with a “Links” column that leads to the archive or library’s description and images, often with bibliographical data including catalogue references. See also the Répertoire: auteurs latins.
DIAMM (the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music). One can search or browse by Country and library. Includes data from the Repertoire International des Sources Musicales, series B/IV: Manuscripts of Polyphonic Music, 11-16 Centuries. For a tutorial, see “Negotiating DIAMM” (Margot Fassler).
