Chant Databases:

On the following CANTUS databases see Alison Altstatt, “Digital and Multimedia Scholarship,” Journal of the American Musicological Society 67 (Spring 2014), 267-85. WorldCat

CANTUS PLANUS (David Hiley, Regensburg). “Two types of data are offered here.
– “Datafiles (read or download)” are text or database files with lists of chant incipits (Herbert’s AMS, Chartres missal, Moosburg gradual, York gradual, feasts of the Sanctorale in Hesbert’s CAO, hymns and their melodies), lists of sources (Le Graduel Romain, CAO vol. 5), and full chant texts (sequences in AH, antiphons and responsories in CAO vols. 3 and 4).
– “Databases (interactive)” are files with facilities for searching for texts or musical incipits. They include two chant bibliographies, catalogues of sources in British, German and French libraries, a list of the sources microfilmed for the Bruno Stäblein Archiv and used in studies based on the Archiv. A special project is devoted to sources from Augsburg, and there is information on sources from Aquileia and Regensburg. There is a catalogue of chant incipits of saint’s offices (historiae). There are search facilities for the series of responsories for Advent and for the Office of the Dead, and for series of alleluias of the post-Pentecost season and the Easter season (the latter in preparation), together with statistical computation of the results. The office chant texts in Hesbert’s CAO vol. 3 and 4 can be searched. Bannister’s “Monumenti vaticani di paleografia musicale latina” has been scanned and formatted to enable searches for notations and manuscript information.”

CANTUS: A Database for Latin Ecclesiastical Chant. “”CANTUS is a database that assembles indices of the Latin ecclesiastical chants found in early manuscript and printed sources for the liturgical Office, such as antiphoners and breviaries. This digital archive benefits scholars in a variety of fields including ecclesiastical monody, the sacred polyphony of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, liturgical drama, hagiography, paleography, philology, ecclesiastical history and the history of monasticism, as well as performers of this early music (including church musicians and directors of liturgy), librarians and archivists. The manuscript inventories are available at no cost. They are fully searchable by textual incipit, keywords, saints’ names or liturgical occasion, and “chant identification numbers” (drawn from standard chant research resources).”

See also the CANTUS analysis site.  “Search the complete set of CANTUS files for some text fragment, e.g. a CAO number or a chant incipit. The results will be presented in geographical order”; or search the full-text database“; cross-reference verse comparisoncross-reference mode comparison“.  Also allows search of the database Late Medieval Liturgical Offices by full-text or by feast.

Global Chant Database. “This is a searchable database of plainchant melodies and texts included in medieval sources and new editions. It serves as a simple tool for searching information on Gregorian chant and other medieval monody including sacred songs. At this time the database contains almost 25.000 records of chant incipits that provide information about text, melody, genre, modus and concordances in new editions and other on-line databases. Some of the records include also hypertext links to facsimiles where a particular chant can be found.”

The CANTUS Index. “Cantus Index is a catalogue of chant texts and melodies for Office and Mass. Multiple online medieval music databases have been connected together through unique “Cantus ID numbers”. Chant texts and melodies can be searched on this Cantus Index website, and matches in any of the partner databases will be returned.”

La Trobe University Library Medieval Music Database.  “Its current scope covers all of the music of the fourteenth century and all liturgical chant currently electronically indexed, adding to these links transcriptions with modern music notation (where melodic information is available),original manuscripts where possible and links to the electronic editions themselves.”  Closed in 2007 but still functional.  Can be browsed by Text, Composer, Genre, Manuscript, Complete Manuscripts,  or Liturgical Feast, and searched by Text, Melody, or Descriptor.
